When I first came to work at Hope Center in August 2011, I knew of Hope Center as being a homeless shelter. I was aware of other programming but didn’t know a lot about it. Over the first several months, I spent a lot of time learning about the programs and began attending community meetings in the Men’s Recovery Program and started to get to know the clients and some of their stories. I didn’t take me long to learn that Hope Center was more than just a homeless shelter and more than rehab.
When I first signed up to volunteer at the Jacobs Hope Cafeteria, I thought I would simply be helping serve food. I had no idea I would leave with a completely new perspective on the Hope Center and a deep gratitude for the services it provides. During my first shift, I quickly realized the importance of time, service, and giving back to your community—especially to the organizations that support it.
When people ask why I give to the Hope Center, the answer is simple and yet, it’s so much more than writing a check; it’s reaching out and touching a life.
I give because I believe in dignity. I believe in second chances. I believe that every person deserves not just shelter, but hope, purpose, and the opportunity to rebuild their life.
At The Hope Center, we don’t just look for people who can do the job - we look for people who believe in the work. People who have a heart for our mission. People who understand that whether they’re doing outreach, providing services, cooking meals, or handling paperwork, they are making a difference in someone’s life every single day.
At the Hope Center’s One Parent Scholar House, we often say this program is more than a place to live. But what does that really mean? It means that behind every door is not just a resident or a family, but a story in motion. A parent balancing coursework and bedtime routines. A child growing up in stability, surrounded by opportunity. A future being built, one decision at a time.
Leadership in the nonprofit sector is often described in terms of passion and purpose. While those are essential, they are only part of the equation. Leading a large, multi-service organization requires navigating constant tension between mission and margin, compassion and accountability, urgency and long-term strategy.
At the Hope Center, that complexity is part of daily operations.
We’re excited to reintroduce the Hope Center blog, a space where we can share stories, updates, and insights from across our community. Our hope is that this blog will give you a deeper look into the work happening every day at the Hope Center and the lives being impacted through our programs and services.
